Why

Improve the health and lives of mothers and children under five by expanding access to safe water infrastructure.

What

In rural parts of Kenya, like Kitui County, most people live in poverty. The maternal and child death rates are among the worst in the country. With healthcare options limited and often far away from rural populations, CMMB’s work focuses on bringing access closer.

CHAMPS, our signature Children and Mothers Partnership program, was launched in Kenya to remove the barriers to healthcare for women and their children. Since then, it has reduced the rate of maternal and child mortality and improved health. Its success has resulted in the program’s expansion into Kitui Central, Mwingi Central, and Mwingi North Sub-counties. The program’s impact is the result of community involvement, adaptation to local needs, and innovative techniques.

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)

Clean, safe water is vital to health. Yet in many communities, reliable access is a challenge—and women and children risk contracting deadly water-borne illnesses. CHAMPS addresses this barrier to health through the installation of hand washing stations, rainwater storage tanks, and ventilated improved pit latrines across schools, health facilities, and other public spaces. Community health promoters distribute water purification sachets and show families how to use them. They also share information about menstrual hygiene management, the dangers of open defecation, and the importance of hand washing. To further promote healthy sanitation practices, community groups engage in soap-making enterprises.
