In many parts of Kenya, safe water in health facilities remains a dream. At Ikanga Sub-County Hospital in Kitui South, that dream is now a reality—thanks to a powerful partnership between CMMB and a private donor committed to improving health outcomes through better water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).

For years, Ikanga Hospital struggled with chronic water shortages. With only one aging reservoir and seasonal rivers in the area, staff were forced to purchase water from faraway towns like Kitui or Mutomo. These costly and unreliable solutions impacted sanitation standards, and at one point, even led to the closure of the maternity unit due to lack of water.

Ikanga Hospital serves over 200 patients a day,” said Dr. Vita, former Medical Superintendent. “Without water, cleaning was irregular, handwashing was difficult, and infection control was a challenge. We even saw spikes in waterborne diseases.”

But change has come.

Through the CMMB WASH project, seven rainwater harvesting tanks and a raised tank were installed and linked to a nearby community borehole. Water piping systems were also introduced in critical areas like the maternity and newborn units. Sinks, toilets, and baths were renovated—not only in Ikanga but also at Ikutha and Mutomo hospitals.

Now, water flows consistently at the facility, making proper hygiene and care possible.

“Handwashing is now routine,” shared Mirriam Chihi, Nursing Officer in Charge at Ikanga Hospital. “It’s been a game changer. We’ve seen fewer infections and cleaner wards. It’s a relief for both staff and patients.”

This intervention has not only improved the hospital’s cleanliness but also restored dignity to maternal and child healthcare services. The maternity unit has reopened, fully functional, and ready to serve the women of Kitui South.

Through continued investment in WASH infrastructure, CMMB and partners are proving that clean water is not just a basic need—it’s a foundation for quality healthcare.
